Ponded pasture is well established throughout Branxholme and compliments our drylands paddocks of rhodes grass with seca stylo. Ponded pasture is a real asset for Branxholme because the banks built a long time ago hold back fresh water during our wet season and allow for these improved legumes to grow, providing greater nutrients for the cattle all year round.
This water then supports some aquatic grasses, namely para grass and hymenachne. These grasses retain high protein content throughout the drier half of our year, enabling our cattle to remain fit and healthy without losing condition, despite the lack of of rainfall.
Ponded Pasture enables costal properties like Branxholme the flexibility of retaining cattle for fattening or growing out to higher weight targets. Ponded Pasture also provides a property with permanent freshwater points within each paddock, to reduce the reliance on existing trough infrastructure.
Below is some photos of the infrastructure and its success, with banks being restored over the last two decades and tidally flushed to result in only fresh water being banked.
