Branxholme was initially an overstocked, conventionally operated cattle property when we first purchased it back in 2015. Since then we have implemented the principles of natural sequence farming developed by Peter Andrews. The natural sequence techniques focus on restoring the natural water cycles to allow for higher nutrient and water flows, making the land more resilient in the long-term. We take advantage of our great wet season rainfall each year to meander the water through the valleys using contour banks and swales.
This focus on improving and refining the natural processes that already occur within the landscape have meant we are able to retain larger volumes of water for our weaner's as we transition into the dry season each year. This also allows for opportunities to implement ponded pasture schemes, where high nutrient legumes can be grown to improve the carrying capacity and weight gains. This higher water retainment has also resulted in higher beef yields, superseding the historical rates within the region, however this factor can also be attributed to our regenerative approach towards low stocking numbers in allowing for greater feed for the cattle.
